The perfect time to discover the island
Zakynthos has a unique charm during the Easter season. For travelers planning
Easter holidays in Greek islands, this period offers a chance to experience the island’s
traditions, local community life, and its nature. In our village, Vasilikos, the landscape
at this time of year feels almost idyllic: olive groves fill with wildflowers and the
peaceful atmosphere is exactly what many travelers are looking for.
Holy Week in Zakynthos

Throughout Holy Week, life on Zakynthos gradually shifts toward the Easter
celebrations, while local people prepare for the Paschal tradition. For those searching
for a traditional Easter in Greece, Zakynthos has a strong religious tradition, also
influenced by its Venetian past.
On Good Friday, On Good Friday, the Epitaph procession moves slowly through the
streets and people following chant hymns, creating a deeply reverent atmosphere.
In the early hours of Holy Saturday morning, the First Resurrection is celebrated in a
special way. Those who will stay up until the morning take part in the local custom of
breaking clay pots and banging metal objects, symbolizing the triumph of life over
death. This tradition, known as Gloria, is a unique experience and one of the most
distinctive Easter customs of the Ionian Islands.
Locals often say that after the First Resurrection, the fasting period is essentially over!
On Holy Saturday night, churches in the villages – including the one in our own village
– fill with people. Just before midnight, candles are lit and when the priest announces
“Christos Anesti” (“Christ is Risen”), the Holy Light is shared among everyone with
smiles and warm embraces.
After the Resurrection service, families and friends gather for the traditional meal,
which usually includes magiritsa soup, gardoumpakia, red eggs and traditional
bread “kouloura”.

Zakynthos in spring

of the island in spring. The island itself enhances the Easter experience. By April, after
the winter rains, the landscape is lush and green. Olive groves, countryside paths and
quiet village roads are perfect for relaxed walks and small explorations.
The weather is usually mild and pleasant, and some visitors (the more adventurous!)
even take the first swims of the season in the crystal-clear waters of Zakynthos.
A peaceful place to stay

nature, our village is an ideal choice. On our small farm in Vasilikos, the little private
villas are scattered among olive trees, offering privacy, tranquility and a close
connection with nature. It’s a place that suits travelers who want to enjoy spring in
Zakynthos at a slower pace.
